Baidu has officially introduced its latest generative AI model, Ernie 4.0, which the company claims is on par with OpenAI’s GPT-4—the Large Language Model (LLM) behind ChatGPT.
The new AI model was unveiled by Baidu CEO Robin Li during the company’s event held in Beijing, China, where he also showcased a range of the model’s new capabilities.
Among the highlighted features, Ernie 4.0 can generate real-time creative content, including martial arts novels, and is said to excel at producing visual media such as posters and videos.
The launch of Ernie AI and Ernie Bot is widely seen as China’s move to compete with global AI leaders like Google and OpenAI, which have developed advanced LLMs such as PaLM 2 (powering Google Bard) and GPT-4.
Reports also note that China now has at least 130 LLMs, representing 40% of the global total—placing the country second only to the United States, which accounts for about 50%, according to data from brokerage firm CLSA.
This rapid growth intensifies the global AI race, especially as major tech giants such as Meta and Amazon join the competition, accelerating advancements in the generative AI sector.
For example, in July 2023, Meta released an upgraded version of its LLaMA model known as Llama 2, which is open-source and available for both commercial and research use.
Amazon has also stepped deeper into the AI field with plans to introduce new generative AI models for its lineup of Echo smart home devices.
