Spotify Launches Miniplayer on Desktop, Allowing Users to Control Music and Podcasts Without Opening the App
Spotify has introduced a new desktop feature called Miniplayer, designed to make it easier for users to control their music or podcasts without needing to open the full app.
The Spotify Miniplayer provides playback controls for all audio content—including music and podcasts.
For video podcasts, users can watch content in a customizable picture-in-picture mode.
The main advantage of the Miniplayer is its non-intrusive playback controls.
According to Gizmochina on Tuesday (March 26, 2024), the new Spotify feature allows users to access essential controls such as volume adjustment, track skipping, and other functions without switching to the main Spotify window.
The Miniplayer can float above other apps, letting users see the artist name and track title currently playing.
This feature is particularly helpful for users who listen to music or podcasts while multitasking, as it minimizes distractions.
Additionally, the Miniplayer works seamlessly alongside the main Spotify app. Users can switch between both interfaces freely without interrupting playback.
The Miniplayer also offers customizable shapes and sizes—square, rectangular, or a slim bar—allowing users to personalize the layout based on available screen space or personal preference.
There is also a compact “pill-shaped” version of the Miniplayer, which provides basic controls while maintaining a minimal visual footprint, ensuring it doesn’t interfere with work on the desktop.
Currently, the Miniplayer is available exclusively to Spotify Premium subscribers. The feature can be accessed via a dedicated icon located in the bottom-right corner of the desktop app, situated between the volume button and the fullscreen button.
