Microsoft has officially rolled out a redesigned web version of the Windows App Store. The new version serves as a replacement for the outdated web interface users have relied on to find Windows apps online.
According to The Verge, Sunday (October 8, 2023), Microsoft has removed the old React-based code that powered the previous Microsoft Store web experience. It has now been replaced with a modern web version built using Shoelace, Lit, Vite, and a C# ASP.NET backend.
“The old site was built on outdated React UI frameworks,” explained Microsoft engineer Judah Gabriel in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He added, “We created a fresh user experience with a carefully designed interface, easier ways to discover new apps, and modern web technologies. I hope people find it beneficial.”
The redesigned store makes it easier to search for Windows apps or PC Xbox games that can be downloaded through the Microsoft Store app on Windows.
However, Gabriel noted that this update will not replace the main Microsoft Store app. “Think of this as the web front end for the Windows app store. They work together,” he said.
The new web front end is also considered strategic for Microsoft as it aims to expand its app and gaming ecosystem beyond Windows.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is also reportedly preparing to launch its Xbox mobile game store as early as 2024. The company previously revealed its plans for this mobile store back in 2022.
