Google Plans to Integrate Gemini AI with Spotify – Play Music Without Opening the App
Google’s generative AI, Gemini, is set to allow users to play songs and podcasts on Spotify without opening the Spotify app.
Previously, Google introduced the Gemini AI assistant for smartphones. This AI chatbot can perform a variety of tasks to assist users in their daily activities.
However, until now, Gemini’s capabilities have been limited, particularly in terms of integration with third-party apps. Google is now taking steps to connect Gemini AI with apps beyond its own ecosystem, with Spotify being one of the first targets.
According to Android Authority, as cited by Gadgets360 on Monday (June 10, 2024), developers discovered Spotify extensions in the code of Google app version 15.22.29.29.arm64 for Android devices.
The code suggests that Google plans to integrate Spotify directly into Gemini AI, allowing users to control Spotify playback through the AI assistant.
Code Leaks Indicate Gemini and Spotify Integration
In the code, the term “robin” refers to Gemini, a name Google used before Gemini was officially called Gemini (formerly Bard).
-
First code snippet: Shows the phrase “Starting to play on Spotify”, indicating that users could play Spotify tracks directly via Gemini.
-
Second code snippet: Displays “Spotify requires sign in”, likely referring to users needing to log in to their Spotify accounts to use this feature.
This suggests that Spotify playback through Gemini will require account authentication, similar to other third-party integrations.
While the code indicates that the feature is under development, it is unlikely to be released immediately. Google appears to be running preliminary tests, and if successful, the Spotify extension could first appear in a beta testing phase before a stable release—potentially taking several months.
For now, users will need to wait for official updates from Google regarding the Gemini and Spotify integration.
