AI-Powered Cyberattacks Will Become Harder to Detect

Generative AI (GenAI) has the potential to become a powerful tool for hackers, enabling more advanced cyberattacks in 2024.
The report Critical Scalability: Trend Micro Security predicts a “tsunami” of sophisticated social engineering tactics and identity theft driven by GenAI.
GenAI is expected to disrupt the phishing landscape in 2024 as its usage grows and its output quality improves—especially with the support of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs).
Trend Micro forecasts that this transformation will make it easier and more affordable to create highly realistic audio and video content, fueling a new wave of business email compromise (BEC), virtual kidnapping, and other forms of cyber fraud.
According to Laksana Budiwiyono, Country Manager of Trend Micro Indonesia, advanced Large Language Models (LLMs) capable of using multiple languages pose a significant threat. These models can eliminate common signs of phishing—such as odd formatting or grammar errors—making attacks much harder to detect.
“Companies in Indonesia must move beyond traditional phishing-awareness training and prioritize the adoption of modern security controls,” Laksana said on Tuesday (January 30, 2024).
He added that advanced defense strategies will not only surpass human capabilities in detecting attacks but also increase organizational resilience against emerging tactics.
“Such initiatives are crucial as AI continues to advance in Indonesia, with its economic impact projected to reach up to USD 366 billion by 2030,” Laksana concluded.
