Google Introduces Emoji Reactions on Gmail Images

Google has officially rolled out emoji reactions on Gmail. According to The Verge, Sunday (October 8, 2023), the feature—first revealed last month—has now begun launching to users.

Google says the rollout will happen gradually, starting with Android users, followed by the web version, and eventually arriving on iOS in the coming months.

If you already have access to the feature, you’ll see a smiling emoji at the bottom of an email. Tap the emoji to open a menu where you can choose your reaction, then tap again to send it.

Some emojis come with special effects—such as the confetti emoji, which triggers a full-screen animation. The feature works similarly to emoji reactions on social media posts or WhatsApp messages.

Users can touch and hold an emoji reaction to see who sent it. If you want to use the same reaction as someone else, simply tap that reaction.

If you’re using a third-party email client, reactions will arrive as a separate email. There are also some limitations to the feature:

  • Emoji reactions cannot be used with school or work accounts.

  • Reactions aren’t available if you're sending an email to more than 20 recipients or an email group list.

  • You also can’t add a reaction if a message already has more than 20 reactions.

Despite the restrictions, this update brings a fun and interactive way for users to engage with emails in Gmail.
