Google Launches Unique “.meme” Internet Domain for Fun and Creative Websites
Google has introduced a new “.meme” domain, designed for website owners who want their site names to sound unique, fun, or even intentionally quirky.
“Meme culture has captured the attention, hearts, and minds of millions across the internet. So it’s only fitting that memes now have their own top-level domain: .meme,” Google Registry announced.
The .meme top-level domain has been released as part of an early-access period, allowing users to register it immediately with an additional one-time fee.
For users who prefer not to pay the extra cost, the domain will become publicly available on December 5, 2023, at standard annual pricing.
Several Websites Already Using the .meme Domain
According to Google’s official blog on Friday (December 1, 2023), several websites have already adopted the .meme domain—four of which are cat-themed sites.
One of the most notable examples is Know Your Meme, which now uses knowyour.meme and stonks.meme to share explanations of viral memes and global internet culture trends.
Lifestyle and beauty platform 10PM Curfew has also adopted the domain with style.meme and girls.meme.
GIF and meme-sharing platform Tenor uses find.meme and create.meme, while other sites such as License.meme and marketing.meme have also joined in.
Even iconic internet cat celebrities are now represented with their own domains:
grumpycat.meme, keyboardcat.meme, nyancat.meme, and cat.meme.
