Microsoft Rebrands Bing Chat to Copilot in a Move to Compete with ChatGPT

Microsoft has officially decided to rename Bing Chat to Copilot in an effort to strengthen its position against ChatGPT.
This rebranding follows Microsoft’s earlier attempt to introduce Bing Chat as an extension of the Bing search engine, offering a chat-based interface similar to ChatGPT.
Microsoft began its major push into artificial intelligence (AI) earlier this year with the launch of Bing Chat. However, less than a year later, the company has chosen to align its product under the Copilot brand.
The name change came just days after OpenAI announced that 100 million people use ChatGPT every week, highlighting the intense competition between Microsoft and OpenAI in the AI assistant market.
“Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise will now become Copilot,” said Microsoft 365 General Manager Colette Stallbaumer in a statement to The Verge, quoted on Friday (Nov 17, 2023).
This shift reflects Microsoft’s broader strategy to compete with ChatGPT and position Copilot as an appealing solution for both consumers and businesses.
Copilot Comes in Free and Paid Versions
Microsoft now offers Copilot in two versions:

A free version, available through Bing and Windows

A paid version, called Copilot for Microsoft 365
The free version is accessible via bing.com and Windows, but will also have a dedicated home at copilot.microsoft.com. Business users can log in using Entra ID, while consumers will need a Microsoft Account.
This move demonstrates Microsoft’s ongoing effort to respond to ChatGPT’s growing popularity and maintain relevance in an increasingly competitive AI landscape.
