Instagram’s Threads is reportedly preparing to launch a Trending Topics feature. This addition is seen as Threads’ latest move to compete with Elon Musk’s platform, X (formerly Twitter).
According to TechCrunch, Wednesday (October 11, 2023), a Threads user spotted an update in a screenshot accidentally posted by a Threads employee over the weekend.
The screenshot showed a list of trending topics along with the number of active “threads” discussing each item.
However, unlike X/Twitter, Threads’ trending list does not appear to include categorized trends such as News, Sports, Entertainment, or personalized “For You” trends.
Even so, the introduction of this feature is expected to help Threads become more competitive with X, particularly as X continues to roll out changes to its platform. This improvement may help attract more users to Threads.
Since its launch on July 5, 2023, Instagram Threads quickly reached 100 million users—faster than many similar apps. However, the platform has since begun to see a decline in user activity.
In response, the Threads team has rapidly released new features to enhance the app, including chronological feeds, a web app version, easy profile switching, a way to view liked posts, and expanded search capabilities.
Despite these updates, Threads has still struggled to rival X. The combination of search and trending features has long positioned X as a go-to platform for real-time news.
Since Threads lacks these tools, the arrival of the Trending Topics feature is expected to make the platform more competitive against X.
