Instagram Releases AI Backdrop Feature: Here’s How Users Can Change Their Stories Backgrounds

Instagram has officially rolled out a new AI Backdrop feature that allows users to change the background of their Instagram Stories using simple text prompts.
According to Ahmad Al-Dahle, Instagram’s Head of AI, the feature is now available to Instagram users in the United States, as announced on his Threads post.
If you want to try the feature, here’s how to use it step by step, as reported by Mashable on Saturday (December 15, 2023).
1. Take a Photo
To use AI Backdrop, start by taking a photo—such as a selfie. However, make sure the subject does not fill the entire frame. Leaving some empty space helps the AI properly detect and process the background.
2. Use the AI Feature
Once the photo is taken, tap the AI button at the top of the screen. The AI will begin processing, and you’ll see the signature shimmering grid before it identifies the subject of your photo.
3. Type the Desired Backdrop
Next, decide what backdrop you want to apply. Tap the Backdrop button and simply type in the background description you’d like.
4. Choose Your AI Backdrop Result
After processing, the feature will generate two AI-created background options. Select the one you like best and add it to your Instagram Story.
Once you post the edited Story, your followers will see a “Try it” label, allowing them to experiment with the AI Backdrop feature as well.
“And after you post it, a ‘Try it’ sticker will appear on the shared image, making it easier for your friends to use the background for the first time,” Al-Dahle explained on Threads.
