Chrome on Desktop Gets Safer and More Memory-Efficient — Here Are the New Features

Google has rolled out several updates to Chrome on desktop to make web browsing safer while giving users greater control over the browser’s memory usage.
One of the key additions in this update is proactive Safety Check, which was introduced in version 120 a few weeks ago, according to TechCrunch on Wednesday (December 27, 2023).
The Safety Check feature on Chrome desktop runs quietly in the background and sends proactive alerts when it detects compromised passwords stored in Chrome or identifies newly installed extensions that may contain malware.
This new security feature also automatically revokes permissions previously granted to websites that haven’t been visited for a long time.
This approach mirrors how Google handles permissions on Android, ensuring unused websites no longer have ongoing access to sensitive capabilities such as location or microphone data.
If a rarely visited website sends excessive notifications, Safety Check will ask users whether they want to disable them.
In addition, the feature will remind users when it’s time to update Chrome.
Enhanced Memory Saver Mode for Better Performance
Alongside Safety Check, Google is updating Chrome’s Memory Saver Mode. The mode now provides more detailed information when users hover over a tab and includes new settings.
This makes it easier to tell Chrome which websites should never enter sleep mode.
Another upcoming update is the ability to save tab groups, a feature set to roll out in the coming weeks.
With this functionality, users can save tab groups and sync them across desktop devices, making it easier to continue tasks or workflows seamlessly.
